If anything good can be said about That Awkward Moment and Divergent, two movies I haven’t seen yet, it has to be acknowledged that they are comings-out of sorts for Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley, respectively. Sure, Teller had Project X and Woodley had The Descendants. But none of these movies gave quite the opportunity to showcase these actors’ talents like The Spectacular Now. This teenage coming-of-age movie flew under the radar last year, making less than $7 million by the end of its run. It’s not perfect, relying too much on obvious plotting. But the relationship between Teller’s class clown, Sutter, and Woodley’s wallflower, Aimee, is natural and sweet. By the end, we’ve learned something of young love; it seems pure in youth, but love really only reveals the depth of its purity when we grow to understand how little we deserve it.
