After the Australian mob family drama Animal Kingdom, you expect David Michôd’s The Rover to show some signs of life. There’s not much life, but you will see a lot of chillingly plausible ideas for life after an apocalyptic event: the devaluing of money, dogs wandering the land after being left behind by their owners, needless killing over a car. Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson are interesting performers at the center of a cold, aimless movie. I don’t really know what to think of this one. But I didn’t feel anything, and that’s enough to tell me that Michôd & Co. misfired here.
Quicker take: Edward Cullen: acting!
