Media outlets wasted no time in comparing this Tame Impala single from April to the suavest of R&B acts: Jamiroquai. Okay, so maybe Jamiroquai isn’t exactly Boyz II Men, but they explored the intersections of psychedelia and funk, and it sure sounded like babymaking music. Tame Impala has always been a psychedelic rock band through and through. I’ve never been a huge fan of theirs- maybe I can only take so much of feeling like I’m tripping. But when they hit it, they hit it big, so their best songs (“Solitude Is Bliss”, “Feels Like We Only Go Backwards”) are some of my favorites of the past few years. “‘Cause I’m a Man” doesn’t sound anything like those, but it may be the best of the bunch. Their rhythmic groove feels bouncier, the vocals feel smoother, and the lyrics, though ostensibly apologetic, feel like a come-on. Are we sure this isn’t Jamiroquai?
