Sharon Van Etten’s Are We There is in the running for the Bummy for 2014 Album of the Year (stay tuned for the results in September), so it was a pleasure to see that she planned to release an EP in June. Just from the title you can tell that this EP covers the same territory of self-loathing and regret as last year’s great LP. Indeed the EP is carryover from the same broken, 10-year relationship covered in Are We There. All five songs are great, but the highlights are the title track, in which Van Etten sounds like she knows she’s already let somebody down, and “Just Like Blood”, which is about the violence of the relationship’s ending. I Don’t Want to Let You Down can feel like more of the same, but when the model is a masterpiece, we can forgive a little forgery.
