Song of the Hour: “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times) (feat. Young Thug & Popcaan)” by Jamie xx

The electronic music that the Internet tends to champion is a self-aware kind of dance music, the kind of dance music made only to comment on other dance music. How to Dress Well was like that on Tom Krell’s first album, and Twin Shadows, and James Blake, and, yes,  Jamie xx. It’s a intellectual form of producing that pays a lot of dividends when considered from in front of a computer screen. But sometimes you just want to dance, you know? On “I Know There’s Gonna Be (Good Times)”, Jamie xx takes a Persuasions sample and two up-and-comers in hip-hop and dancehall respectively and crafts a song that’s probably meta, but you’ll never notice, because he finally gave us something to dance to, so let’s dance. Screw the meta.
